Windows 11`s issues

Topic: Helpdesk

A lot of functionality has appeared with the emergence of windows 11  : Multi-tasking features, a more sophisticated Microsoft store, an impressive change in UI design and more.

But that doesn’t mean it’s perfect and ready to be used.

Many who were quick to adopt the new operating system were also quick to report some of the problems compared to windows 10.

We’ll discover some of these problems one by one in this article.

Memory Leak

In windows 11, the file explorer suffers from a memory leak. What this means is that even if you open and close the File Explorer application, it will still consume your system RAM in the background.

On gaming systems, as well as systems where RAM might be limited, this is a big problem when it comes to daily performance. Your system will not use all available resources and , in the case of file explorer, will abuse those resources .

In simple terms, a memory leak occurs when a computer program incorrectly manages memory allocations. The memory which is no longer needed by the computer is not released and it results in more memory consumption than requirement. A memory leak can force your computer to run slower than normal.

The memory leak issue on the Windows 11 Explorer has been reported on Microsoft Facebook Hub. However, the company is yet to pass an official statement on this issue. If you are someone who is planning to upgrade to Windows 11 in the near future, it is advisable not to do so. The users who are running Windows 10 should stay relaxed as it will be supported until 2025.

Performance Issues

Windows 11 promises to improve the performance of your PC through the way it handles foreground and background tasks, but that’s not always the case. There are still people reporting performance issues with the new operating system.

The best example of the performance issue is for windows 11 systems with AMD processors. On october 6, AMD issued a notice announcing performance declines on AMD processors of up to 15%, especially when playing or using applications that depend on the processor’s memory subsystem.

The impact on performance can be more detectable in processors > 8 cores above 65 W TDP. A software update is being developed to address this issue, with expected availability in October 2021,” said AMD.

If you are using Windows 10, you can suspend the update to Windows 11 version 21H2 (original version) until Microsoft has resolved or at least proposed a solution for these performance issues. If you are already assigned, AMD recommends waiting for AMD and Microsoft software updates.

In addition to AMD, benchmarking firm UL Procyon confirmed that a Windows 11 feature called “Virtualization Based Security (VBS)”, which is now enabled by default, causes performance declines. Therefore, the reference scores may be slightly lower by comparing Windows 11 version 21H2 with VBS enabled.

Virtualization-based security (VBS) is a hardware virtualization feature that allows Windows to offer additional security solutions and protect the operating system from known vulnerabilities.

Compatibility issues

The biggest controversy with windows 11 concerns the systems with which it is compatible. Right now, you probably know that the new operating system only works on systems with an 8th generation or newer Intel processor or the AMD Ryzen 2000 or newer series that supports TPM 2.0. Microsoft argued that this is due to security, reliability and compatibility.

Yet this has also left many modern systems in the dust and unable to run windows 11 . In fact, even in the workplace , reports find that Windows 11 requirements are too high for most workstations. With 55% not being able to automatically upgrade to the new operating system. For consumers, a survey conducted in the months leading up to the launch of Windows 11 found that 20% of people do not have the requirements to run Windows 11 .

However, Microsoft hasn’t been clear about what happens if you install Windows 11 on an unsupported PC. He warns that these devices “will no longer be guaranteed to receive updates”, but despite our attempts to get a direct response, Microsoft has not been clear on this point.

Among the compatibility errors that windows 11 caused we find :

  • Oracle Virtualbox and windows 11 :

Virtual machines may not start or other errors may be started when virtual machines are started on window 11 . An incompatibility was discovered between Windows 11 and Oracle’s VirtualBox virtualization software. Microsoft has put an upgrade block on devices with VirtualBox installed.

  • Applications that use certain non-ASCII characters in their registry keys :

Applications that use certain non-ASCII characters in the Registry may not start or may cause other problems on Windows 11 devices. Errors can result in a blue screen.

  •  Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) :

Microsoft is investigating a problem that causes the installation of IPP, Internet Printing Protocol printers, to be “not completed successfully”. The company notes that PPI printers are usually located in organizations and not at home.

Conclusion

The “slow deployment” of Windows 11 is also related to this point. Despite the release on October 5, not everyone gets Windows 11 right away for compatibility reasons. To ensure a quality experience, Microsoft is rolling out Windows 11 in phases as it did with Windows 10 featured updates.

Hardware eligibility, reliability measures, device age, and “other factors that affect the upgrade experience” come into play when you see Windows 11 in Windows Update. Officially, Microsoft has indicated that it officially expects all eligible PCs to receive the update by mid-2022.
